Fun Facts

Nice is one of the oldest human settlements in all of Europe, with archaeologists finding evidence of hominids living here dating back 400,000 years, and some of the first evidence anywhere of fire-making and habitat-building. First known as a Greek settlement named Nikaia—after Nike, the goddess of victory—the city has traded hands many times over the years, finally becoming a French territory in 1860. Now the fifth-largest city in France, it is the second-most-visited.
