The list of famous artists and writers spending time in Nice is exhaustive, but the ones who most noticeably left their imprint on the city are Matisse and Chagall, both living the latter halves of their life here. It was also a haven for writers to spend the winter, among them Jean Cocteau, Nietzsche and F. Scott Fitzgerald. Of more recent fame, the Rolling Stones recorded the legendary “Exile on Main Street” in the seaside suburb of Villefranche-sur-Mer, which today counts Elton John and Tina Turner among its residents.
