Stories of the world’s notorious romances stick around for a reason: everyone wants to hear a great love story. Though most of the storied rendezvous ended at the Père-Lachaise Cemetary, not all of them waned for all eternity. Jean Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir are buried side by side, spending their post-Café de Flore days in just as close proximity. The remains of the star-crossed 12th century theologian Abélard and his student/lover Héloïse are entombed here, the inscription on their grave, written in 1701, reading, “The love which united their spirits during their lives united their bodies in this tomb.” If you haven’t a sentimental bone in your body, there are still attractions aplenty in this cemetery. The darling of The Doors, Jim Morrison, was buried in the northern corner of Division Six, and one of the most visited tombs at Père-Lachaise is that of Oscar Wilde. It is often stuffed with letters and littered with red lipstick kisses from the author’s adoring fans. In case you reach the grave, which is about a hundred yards south of the Colombarium, as the local crematorium is known, to find it scrubbed clean, it gets a bath every several years and then the love notes and kisses begin to build again.
