If you’ve never visited the Louvre, you truly cannot imagine the vastness of the collections and the beauty of the former palace that houses them. The building was home to the royal family before Versailles was built, and it houses masterpieces like the Mona Lisa and the Venus de Milo. Over 35,000 objects are on display in three wings that hold a diverse collection spanning from antiquity to the mid 19th century. A major portion of the museum’s art consists of European paintings and sculptures, though Egyptian, Greek and Oriental art are also on display. It will give you, quiet literally, the world of art at your beck and call. The building itself is a treasure—built in the 12th century as a fortress, it was converted into a royal palace in the 14th century. The original fortress was demolished and a new building rose, in all its French neoclassical glory, in its place. It was treated to a succession of expansions during the 15th and 16th centuries, which envelope the courtyard that is generally teeming with people wanting to be photographed with I.M. Pei’s glass pyramid that spikes up from the hallowed ground of a former dynasty. You can’t imagine how the beauty of the building adds to the pleasure of viewing the art until you walk through it. What can top seeing sculptures by Michelangelo and paintings by Leonardo da Vinci?
