Hotel Le Meurice has a reputation as a swanky joint. King Alphonse XIII of Spain was one of the first people to book a room at the regal inn overlooking the Jardin des Tuileries, and other dignitaries from around the globe followed, including Queen Victoria and the Sultan of Zanzibar. If stuffy comes to mind given the roster of guests noted above, not so: it was Salvador Dali’s favorite place to stay in Paris and a makeover had Philippe Starck treating the public spaces to a Dali-esque dash of whimsy. France’s crowned prince of design also inspired Bar 228’s drink The Starcky. If you’ve been craving a glass of Dom Perignon but fear the sticker shock on a bottle given the exchange rate, this is one of those places in Paris where you can buy it by the glass.
