An evening at the Opéra National de Paris is one of the most glorious social occasions the city has to offer. Also called the Palais Garnier after its architect Charles Garnier, it is a grand exemplification of French Baroque at its most elaborate. Merely stepping inside the opulence is enough to make an admirer of velvet and gold leaf swoon! Within the labyrinth of interweaving corridors, stairwells, alcoves and landings, Paris’ elite mix and mingle when the season opens each September (which runs until June). Wagner and Puccini are often on the schedule, as are lesser-known composers. Art buffs should take a tour of the building to see the whimsical Marc Chagall painting surrounding the chandelier in the main performance hall. There’s a literary link to the historic building as well. It was a mishap in this opera house in 1896 that inspired Gaston Leroux’s gothic novel The Phantom of the Opera.
