Each year, millions of nature lovers flock to the Gulf Islands National Seashore, the longest protected shore in the country. Outdoor activities are endless in this national park, from snorkeling and fishing to hiking and bird watching, the Gulf-side retreat has something for everyone in the family. From the Naval Live Oaks Visitors Center, set out on one of the nine hiking trails, including the Andrew Jackson Trail or sections of the 40-mile bike loop. Take a ranger-led tour of the historical sites within the park, and learn more about the natural birdlife in the salt marsh habitats. More than 200 designated campsites are available at Fort Pickens, or for a real adventure, register for a primitive camping permit and pitch your tent right on the shore.
