The Hohokam people migrated from Mexico to the area that is now Phoenix about 2,500 years ago. These “people who have gone before” (as the name translates) built an incredible civilization upon which modern-day Phoenix is now built, and then they disappeared, presumably as a result of the long winters. Centuries later during the Civil War, the U.S. Army established Fort McDowell in the mountains to the east, and by 1870, the area had 300 residents—Phoenix was born. In 1885, Phoenix became the state capital and in 1912, when Arizona was admitted as the 48th state, the area had developed a booming cotton industry. Meanwhile, Scottsdale became the go-to destination for those who suffered respiratory ailments or simply sought warmer climes. By 1930, travelers filled the Arizona Biltmore, the first of a plethora of lavish retreats for which the area is known today. And in the 1950s, more and more people flocked to Phoenix for a very simple reason: the invention of the air-conditioner. Phoenix has grown so rapidly that today it is the sixth largest city in the United States.
