Frank Lloyd Wright and Albert Chase McArthur brought their respective architectural panache to Phoenix in the 1920s with the Arizona Biltmore, where the guest list was like a who’s who of Hollywood. Chewing-gum magnate William Wrigley Jr. brought his money here during that same period, as is evidenced by the stately Wrigley Mansion. Conservative Arizona Senator and 1964 Republican Presidential nominee Barry Goldwater was born and raised in Phoenix, and much of his family still lives here (other political figures who have lived in Phoenix include William Rehnquist, John McCain and Sandra Day O’Connor). Well-known singer Stevie Nicks hails from Phoenix, as does American Idol sensation Jordin Sparks and the band the Gin Blossoms. Rock musician Alice Cooper, known for his on-stage theatrics, now calls Phoenix home and even owns a sports bar here called Cooper’s Town Bar & Grill. Other notables living in Phoenix now include boxing great Muhammad Ali and the writer Stephenie Meyer, known for the Twilight series. Minneapolis native Bob Ulrich, the former CEO of Target, conceived and funded the new Musical Instrument Museum in Phoenix, and fans of American Idol may wish to know that whenever the popular show comes to town, the judges all take refuge at the Royal Palms Resort & Spa.
