Charles Bridge

Karlův Most (between Malá Strana at Old Town)

Price: Free admission

Type: Monuments & Historic Sites

There are plenty of beautiful spots in this oh-so-photogenic city, but the midpoint of Charles Bridge makes for some of the city’s prettiest pictures. On one side are the warren-like lanes of Malá Strana and Prague Castle’s superimposing spires. On the other, the ochre roofs of Old Town and New Town glisten in the afternoon sunlight. Don’t be fooled by the somewhat modern appearance of its 30 religious statues, many of which only arrived in the Baroque era: Originally constructed in 1357, the bridge has witnessed more than 650 years of history, including a crucial 1648 battle during the Thirty Years’ War. Nowadays the setting is much more peaceful, with vendors offering trinkets, souvenirs and flash portraits to an almost-constant tourist crowd. But if you wait until very late at night, you can often get a few minutes alone in the city’s most romantic setting.
