In 1876, the Rhode Island Women’s Centennial Commotion found themselves with $1,675 leftover in their budget. They came up with two ways to spend the money: either put a drinking fountain in Roger Williams Park, or start the Rhode Island School of Design. They voted to start the school and since then, RISD has earned a reputation as one of the nation’s best. The school’s museum displays over 84,000 pieces, including works from Monet and Warhol, plus one of the finest ancient art collections in the country.
