This site is on the National Register of Historic Places, and if you love history, it’s a must-see. Located on the west bank of the American River in Sacramento, the Folsom Powerhouse was constructed in 1895. Water from the river turned generators that created electricity, powering the city of Sacramento, 22 miles downstream from Folsom. When the powerhouse opened, Sacramento held a “Grand Electric Carnival” parade downtown to celebrate. Visitors to the powerhouse can view vintage generators still in place, as well as the control switchboard, massive General Electric transformers, the canal system that brought water into the powerhouse, and more. Large group tours are available through special arrangements.
