It might seem obvious, but with so many modes of transportation operating throughout this fair city, it can be all too easy to pass up San Francisco’s most famous (and most mobile) landmark. Spend a day touring the town aboard historic cable cars, which were first pulled up the hills in the autumn of 1873, and relish your chance to live on the edge. Expect no reminders to “keep your hands and feet inside the vehicle at all times"; in fact, “hanging out” is encouraged on this ride—as long as you grasp the poles provided. Consider a trip along the Powell-Mason route following a visit to Lombard Street. The landscape of the course will satisfy even the most resistant tourist as the grip man rolls your car downhill at a clipped pace. Wave to passersby as you approach the turntable just beyond Union Square, and step off the tracks knowing you’ve just become intimately acquainted with the City by the Bay.
