There is archaeological evidence that there was a human settlement in the San Francisco area in 3000 B.C.! The first European visit to the area was by the Spanish in 1769. The Presidio of San Francisco was established in 1776. Modern San Francisco is very densely-populated, and home to more than 800,000 people.
