It took owner and artist Estevão Silva da Conceição more than 20 years to build this Gaudi-like house, which he began in his 20s in the remote favela of Paraisópolis. It’s a remarkable piece of living artwork, where everything (and we mean everything) is covered in mosaic tiles. The property forms a maze of arches and tunnels and is filled with all sorts of, well, junk, such as old clocks, tools, antique toys and even electronics. There’s also a roof terrace with impressive views of the shantytowns below. This architectural wonder is not often listed in the guidebooks and can be confusing to reach without your own transportation, though those who make the effort are rewarded with a truly original and stirring site.
