In the city of Santos, 45 miles from São Paulo, located in the one time coffee stock market, is Brazil’s coffee museum. While the art nouveaux building, now a national monument, was formerly used to determine the daily price of Brazilian coffee and centralize the Brazilian industry from 1922 to 1957, today it documents the evolution of the country’s coffee culture, through old photographs, models and displays, as well as the industry’s link to the national economy. Stained glass windows created by local artist Benedito Calixto add an almost spiritual dimension to the museum. Rotating exhibitions focus on the impact of immigrant groups, coffee barons and political figures. An excellent café sells coffee from around the country and desserts typical of the port city.
