The 135,000-square-foot Mercado Municipal Paulistano, designed by Brazilian architect Francisco de Paula Ramos de Azevedo, near estação São Bento downtown, was built in the 1930s and was recently renovated. The fascinating two-level indoor market with stained-glass windows, headquarters of the 1932 revolution, is one of the most affordable and entertaining places to grab a bite to eat anywhere in the city. On the ground level you’ll encounter hundreds of stalls, mostly selling raw ingredients ranging from piles of pitaya (dragonfruit) to exotic spices. The upper level is home to a dozen or so small restaurants spilling out onto one large terrace. These eateries, such as Hocca Bar, are famous for their Mortadella sandwiches and croquettes, as well as cheep beer. You’ll never spend much, but you’ll always leave full.
