São Paulo’s huge Japanese population (1.5 million) is the largest in the world outside of Japan, and its epicenter is São Paulo’s Liberdade district, aka Little Tokyo. The district is reminiscent of a Chinatown, with restaurants, grocery stores, mineral shops, curio shops, Japanese-style lampposts, temples, ramen houses and sushi bars. On Sundays there’s an outdoor craft market on Liberdade’s main square, Praça da Liberdade, which can be an interesting stop. The Museum of Japanese Immigration traces the arrival of Japanese in the city to 1908 (many came to work on coffee plantations). More recently, Japanese-Brazilian food has begun to take off on an international level, with new restaurants and cocktail bars opening at a dizzying pace.
