São Paulo’s largest and best-known zoo is located 45 minutes southeast of the city in the district of Agua Funda, a short bus or cab ride from the Jabaquara metro station. The fourth-largest zoo in the world and the largest in all of Brazil, the Fundação Parque Zoológico attracts more than 1.5 million visitors each year. Inside you’ll find an impressive collection of more than 3,200 creatures, such the rare white rhinoceros, rare Amazonian mammals and birds, a monkey island, large cat species and a cold-blooded reptile house—home to various species of snakes and other creepy crawlies. Opened in 1958, the zoo is often applauded for its use of large enclosures and participation in the protection of wild animals.
