Born in Rio de Janeiro in 1907, perhaps no one individual has shaped the visual landscape of the country of Brazil or the city of São Paulo as much as still-living centenarian architect Oscar Niemeyer. While he is best known for his design of the United Nations in New York and his buildings in Brasilia, his presence can still be felt significantly in the capital. There’s Oca, the flying-saucer like exhibition hall, and large event space Fundação Bienal, both in Parque do Ibirapuera, which he also designed with landscape architect Roberto Burle Marx. There’s also the city’s Centro Musical, the Sambódromo do Anhembi, the Memorial da América Latina leisure complex and dozens of office buildings and residential towers.
