Nestled on a bluff of the Wilmington River, this cemetery is world renowned for its headstones with notable names and unique architecture. The largest of Savannah’s municipal cemeteries, Bonaventure is located on the site of a plantation and was made famous by the novel and movie Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. A public cemetery since 1907, citizens can still purchase burial rights at the historic site. Today, hundreds of travelers stroll the tree-lined walkways, explore the centuries-old sculptures and learn about the historical figures that were laid to rest at Bonaventure—some include popular lyricists Johnny Mercer and three-term Savannah mayor John F. Wheaton. The Bonaventure Historical Society as well as other commercial companies offer tours of the cemetery.
