Originally organized in 1773, this church’s current sanctuary was completed in 1859 and still contains many historical elements including its stained glass windows, baptismal pool and 1832 pipe organ. Sit in the solid oak pews, installed in the early 1900s, and marvel at the church’s “Nine Patch Quilt” ceiling design that symbolized the church was a safe house for slaves. In the balcony, discover the church’s original pews that were made by slaves and include markings in African dialect. Also, note the holes in the floor in the shape of an African prayer symbol. As one of the largest gathering places for blacks and whites during segregation, the church also was used as a graduation location for students that were not allowed to march with their class.
