Extending from Gaston Street to Park Avenue along Bull Street, Forsyth Park was the first large park created in Savannah and remains one of the city’s most recognized green spaces. Complete with walking paths, a café and recreational activities, as well as a Fragrant Garden, the 30-acre park’s centerpiece is the two-tiered, cast-iron fountain, which was erected in 1858 and restored in 1988. The park is said to have been inspired by the urban renewal that took place in Paris in the 19th century, and the park’s fountain is thought to be a copy of one located in the Place de la Concorde. Travelers from around the world pose for photographs in front of this ornate landmark, which is surrounded by a pool and wrought-iron fence. Named for Georgia governor John Forsyth, the park also contains several monuments including one paying tribute to those killed in the Civil War.
