Discover China’s contemporary art scene by visiting Shanghai's hottest arts district located at 50 Moganshan Road. Filled with over 120 galleries and art studios, this new arts district was once a textile mill. Now, people call it “Moganshan” or “M50,” and just like the 798 Art Community in Beijing, M50 is a blossoming arts district that has planted itself at the center of Shanghai’s art scene. Art collectors are known to frequent the venue, and a Belgian princess has been spotted here. If you are itching to know something about the country’s most famous contemporary artist, “M50” is the place because many of them have studio space in the hood: think Zhou Tiehai, Ding Yi and Xu Zhen—all of whom have participated in Venice Biennale. There are also top galleries, like ShanghArt, Eastlink Gallery and Biz Art, in the nabe; and Zhou Tiehai, the artist best known for his satirical works and Joe Camel paintings, has a 2,150-square-foot studio here.
