If you want to feast your eyes on a cacophony of colorful wares for which China is known, take a morning or an afternoon to wander along TaiKang Road. Exploring this maze of alleyways is like stepping back in time as the neighborhood was built in the 1930s as a residential village. Now, TaiKang Road, in the heart of the French Concession, is a maze of tiny lanes that have become a bohemian arts area with galleries and outdoor cafés filled with charm and mystique. You’ll find art and fashion boutiques here to snap up out-of-the-ordinary souvenirs, and since the nabe still houses lots of locals, it will feel more like a true cultural experience and less like a touristy one.
