When Syracuse was established in 1825 the village had 15 merchants, one newspaper and one fire department.

As of the 2010 census, Syracuse’s population was 145,170, making it the fifth most populous city in New York state and the 170th most populous in the country.

The city derives its name from Siracusa, a city on the eastern coast of the Italian island of Sicily.
