Mission San Luis de Apalache, also known as San Luis de Talimali, was the western anchor of the mission system stretching from the Apalachicola River to St. Augustine in the 1600s. During that time, Florida had more than 100 missions. This is the only one with living descendants – the Apalachees. On-going excavations at the Mission San Luis have uncovered the Spanish fort, religious complex, council house and several homes. All of these structures, including the largest known Indian Council House in the Southeast, have been meticulously reconstructed in this National Historic Landmark. Mission San Luis is also home to a majestic visitor center where permanent exhibits include 17th-century Spanish colonial art and artifacts. In addition, daily costumed interpreters reenact life in the 1600s through the Misson’s “living history” program and archeological demonstrations are ongoing as well.
