Dating from the 3rd to 2nd century BC, El Rey is known for its two main plazas. Most other Mayan cities contain only one plaza. A platform tops the pyramid that has paintings on stucco inside its vault. The discovery of skeletons at the apex and base suggest that the sight may have been a royal burial ground. Originally named Kin Ich Ahau Bonil, Mayan for "king of the solar countenance," the site has been linked to astronomical practices in ancient Mayan culture.
