Every four years, the nation’s political attention turns to Des Moines in what many consider to be the most influential factor in the run for president. Why is Iowa so important? Simply put, it’s the first state to officially weigh in on whose campaign is winning the hearts of Americans (and who needs to refine their approach or drop out). Since 1976, both republicans and democrats, along with journalists and celebrities, flock to Iowa looking for support in their bid for candidacy. It’s fun to see this Midwestern city morph into a political hotbed for the few months leading up to the big day. Even if you can’t officially vote (it’s only open to Iowa residents, people!), it’s quite the scene. Try to elbow your way in to the 801 Chophouse, a favorite dinner spot for those in from D.C.
