In the winter, some 6,000 elk migrate to the National Elk Refuge just northeast of town, wandering the Jackson Hole valley in great, shaggy herds. From December through March, daily horse-drawn sleigh rides through the refuge leave from the Greater Yellowstone Visitor Center in Jackson. The hour-long ride across a snowed-in prairie can be chilly, but the payoff is an up-close glimpse of the hulking and docile elk in their natural habitat, along with some of the refuge’s other occasional residents—bison, coyotes, mountain sheep, trumpeter swans and more. The 25,000-acre refuge also shows off amazing winter views of the Teton Range, the all-white peaks rising up jagged and foreboding before a postcard wildlife scene. Sleighs fill up on a first-come, first-served basis every 20 minutes or so from dawn until dusk. Don’t forget your hat and mittens.
