Technically, the bustling green space at the heart of downtown Jackson is called George Washington Memorial Park, but you’re far more likely to hear it simply referred to as Town Square. The square is ringed by shops and galleries, and the clapboard sidewalks stay busy with wandering visitors all summer long. At each of the square’s four corners is a massive welcome arch made from shed elk antlers, and you won’t be alone if you pose in front of one for a picture. Summer evenings at 6 p.m. (except Sundays), the square fills with costumed lawmen, looters and bystanders for a reenacted Old West shoot-out. If you feel like getting off your feet for a while, a stagecoach at the square’s southwest corner will clop you around downtown for about $5 a passenger.
