Housed in an early 16th-century Olivetan monastery named after the Renaissance intellect who mastered art, science and technology, the Museo Nazionale Della Scienza E Della Tecnologia Leonardo Da Vinci is the largest science and technology museum in the country. More than a museum, this is a center for debate and research, an active laboratory and a lively meeting place where visitors discover and explore science through educational and engaging activities. The museum covers just about every aspect of technology and science, including metallurgy, bell-casting, optics, acoustics and astronomy. Exhibits are cleverly laid out so that visitors discover, for example, the evolution of a cartwheel into a Vespa or Pascal’s calculating techniques using an abacus to the first computer processor. The museum’s most popular exhibition, however, is the Enrico Toti, the first submarine constructed in Italy after World War II. Up to six helmeted visitors are taken at a time on a guided tour on board.
