Located in the hills of nearby Cimiez, this museum holds the world’s largest public collection of works by Mark Chagall. Born in Russia in 1887, Chagall is widely considered the most significant Jewish artist of the 20th century. He lived the last half of his life as a French citizen until his death in nearby Saint-Paul-de-Vence at the age of 97. The artist himself donated the works in this handsome museum, which focuses on 17 large, dazzling paintings inspired by the Old Testament themes of Genesis, Exodus and the Song of Songs. The collection also contains 450 other paintings, ceramics, sculptures and drawings by Chagall. Reach the museum via 10-minute taxi trip from most parts of Nice, or take bus 15 from the Massena tram station to the Musee Chagall stop. Buses arrive every 20 minutes.
