Here in the hilltop neighborhood of Cimiez, next to the ruins of the Roman settlement where Nice’s civilization began thousands of years ago, this 17th-century palace surrounded by olive trees houses one of the largest Matisse collections in the world. Matisse lived the last half of his life in Nice and is buried nearby. Most of the works displayed here were painted in Nice. This museum is unparalleled in its presentation of Matisse’s artistic development from the first paintings of the late 19th century to the paper cut-outs he explored at the end of his life. See, too, how the quality of daylight and the sparkling Mediterranean inspired and changed this master of color. In addition to 68 paintings, find hundreds of drawings, photos, sculptures and cut-outs, as well as a fascinating collection of 170 objects that belonged to the painter himself. To reach the museum, take a short taxi ride, or board bus 15 from Massena tram station to stop Les Arènes/Musée.
