Nice is the site of some of the oldest human settlements in Europe—dating back at least 400,000 years. Its written history began with the founding of a Greek stronghold called Nikaia Polis, named for the goddess of victory Nike. To counter this, the Romans founded Cemenelum in the hills just above, in the modern-day Nice neighborhood of Cimiez. The ruins of that civilization are very well-preserved today: One can see the remains of the amphitheater (which once sat 5,000 spectators), Roman baths and the Via Julia, a major Roman road that led here. Be sure to see the accompanying Musée Archéologique de Nice-Cemenelum, which holds the many artifacts that were unearthed here.
