One of the oldest medieval towns on the French Riviera, this charming village nestled on the top of a steep hill reveals narrow medieval streets perfect for a leisurely stroll. It’s long been home to celebrated people, from artists Chagall, Matisse and Dufy to writers D.H. Lawrence, James Baldwin and F. Scott Fitzgerald. Even today, modern-day French notables such as philosopher Bernard Henri-Levy call St.-Paul de Vence home. The compact village also offers impressive views of the valley, surrounding villages and the Mediterranean Sea. Find one of the best spots to take it in by entering the small cliffside cemetery, where Chagall is buried. Art lovers must be sure to stop at the nearby Maeght Foundation on the way back to Nice. St.-Paul de Vence is a 25-minute, €45 (approx. $58) taxi ride from Nice. A less expensive (and only a little slower) option is the 400 bus, which leaves frequently from JC Bermond station in central Nice, at Rue Gobernatis & Avenue Felix Faure.
