As an ode to Sylvia Beach, an American expat who established the first Shakespeare and Company during the 1920s, George Whitman opened up his own store in 1951. Upholding the same commitment to budding artists as his inspirational predecessor, Whitman's Shakespeare and Company is a bibliophile's dream. The shop—more of a haven for aspiring writers and poets than your average bookstore—is recognized as a cultural institution for its collection of tomes and enduring devotion to the written word. In addition to a "Poet's Corner," and wall-to-wall bookshelves, the store is also rumored to have beds where aspiring writers can rest as they work through bouts of writer's block. Though Whitman has retired from his store duties, his daughter, Sylvia Beach Whitman, continues to honor the traditions of her namesake.
