Built on the bluffs looking out to Pensacola Bay, Fort Barrancas has nearly 250 years of history dating back to 1763 when the British built the Royal Navy Redoubt out of logs and mud on this site. The Spanish built two forts on the bluff in 1797, and the current fort, built by American engineers in 1844, was one of four forts constructed to protect the Pensacola Navy Yard. After visiting the masonry fort and Water Battery, take the half-mile Trench Trail to the Advanced Redoubt. Constructed between 1840 and 1875, the Advanced Redoubt was built to protect the Navy yards from a northern, land-based assault. Tours of Fort Barrancas are available daily at 2 p.m. and at the Advanced Redoubt every Saturday at 11 a.m.
