This spectacular spot functioned as architect Frank Lloyd Wright’s western abode from 1937 until his death in 1959 at the age of 91. Today it is the main campus of the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture and home to the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation. The complex drew its name from Wright’s summer home, Taliesin, in Spring Green, Wisconsin. Taliesin West is made of local desert rocks and large boulders, and sunlight played a crucial role in the design as Wright believed natural light kept his apprentices in touch with the environment. A handful of the architect’s most celebrated buildings were designed in the drafting room at Taliesin West, including the Guggenheim Museum in New York. Restoration work to the private quarters of Mr. and Mrs. Wright was completed in 2004, and tours are conducted on an ongoing basis.
