Located near the Mayo Clinic on the north side of Phoenix, MIM is the first museum in the world dedicated to the celebration of global instruments. Its exhibits include instruments from 200 countries and territories, arranged in galleries by geographic region. The museum’s credo, which appears on a wall next to the entrance, is: “Music is the language of the soul.” Each exhibit at MIM has documentary or archival footage to match, so visitors can see how the instruments are actually played. There’s even an “artist’s gallery” with exhibits centered on the lives of notable musicians such as Elvis Presley and John Lennon (the piano on which Lennon composed “Imagine” is a highlight). Wireless hot spots around MIM provide loops of streamed music, immersing guests in the sounds of musical instruments as they make their way through the galleries. MIM also has an Experience Room that’s great for kids, allowing visitors to play instruments from around the world.
