A verdant, grassy island tucked between the broad Vltava River and tiny Čertovka creek, Kampa Island welcomes a constant stream of picnickers, soccer players, families and romantic couples. In part, they’re drawn in by the location: On the Malá Strana side of the Charles Bridge, Kampa Island is a quiet, often-overlooked setting in the heart of the touristic city center. But since its opening in 2003, a second part of the draw has come from the exciting exhibitions at Museum Kampa, a gallery located in a renovated mill dating back to at least the year 1393—not that you could tell by its current costume of stylish minimalism and glass. Inside is a solid collection of modern art, primarily from Central and Eastern Europe, including some 215 pieces by the Paris-based Czech modernist František Kupka, as well as 17 outstanding sculptures by the great Otto Gutfreund.
