After the big changes of late 1989, locals moved on quickly and completely... leaving it up to an American businessman to build a museum dedicated to the country’s 41 years of totalitarianism. Located above a McDonald’s on the city’s priciest shopping street, the Museum of Communism shows the way things really were in three deft strokes: the dream of Communist ideals, the dreary reality of Communism in practice and the final nightmare of state oppression and terror. Sourced from antiques shops, junk bins and private collections, the museum is stocked with vintage propaganda posters and plays a soundtrack of pre-revolution songs that praise the proletariat worker. Not surprisingly, the museum has so far been much more popular with tourists than with locals, though Czechs who do visit are often heard to leave whispering in agreement—yes, things here really were that bad.
