Poor Prague: Not only is it home to the largest ancient castle in the world, the Czech capital has yet another hilltop castle on the other side of town. Often incorrectly said to be older than Prague Castle, the old Vyšehrad site has more of a relaxed, natural setting than its cross-town counterpart, nowadays consisting of rose gardens, grassy fields and romantic ramparts that overlook the Vltava River (and provide amazing views—bring your camera). Despite the grandeur, Vyšehrad sees far fewer tourists, making it a good place to get away from the crowds. Atmospheric cemeteries are something of a theme in Prague, and Vyšehrad is no exception: The stately graveyard up here contains the tombs of many of the country’s greatest cultural figures, including the composers Antonín Dvořák and Bedřich Smetana, the writer Karel Čapek and the artist Alphonse Mucha.
