São Paulo’s state art museum is housed in a neoclassical 1900 building, a former high school, not far from downtown in Parque da Luz. The collection is one of the most important in the entire country, and a much-needed major renovation wrapped up in 1997 and finally gave the space a presentable setting for the works inside. The highlight is the Brazilian paintings from the 19th century to present. Sculptures are particularly well represented—don’t miss the attached sculpture garden—with Raphael Galvez’s O Brasileiro and numerous works by Alfredo Ceschiatti, famed for his work in Brasilia. European paintings and sculptures from the 19th century are also represented. The signs throughout the museum are in Portuguese only.
