This museum pays homage to Dr. Ralph Mark Gilbert, leader of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and pastor of the First African Baptist Church for 16 years. He reorganized the Savannah Branch of the NAACP in 1942 and by 1950 helped create more than 40 NAACP branches in Georgia. The museum, housed in the former Wage Earners Savings and Loan Bank, once the largest bank for African-Americans in the county, allows visitors to explore the history of Savannah’s civil rights movement from slavery to the present through photographs and exhibits. The three-floor building also contains lecture halls, an African-American book collection for children and a gift shop.
