Housed in the old canal weighlock building (built in 1850 during the Greek Revival days of upstate New York) that was once used to determine the weight of canal boats (and thus their toll), the Erie Canal Museum boasts a comprehensive collection of Erie Canal-related documents, artifacts and photographs. The second floor features a number of life-sized displays from the Erie Canal days including a tavern, a general store, a theatre stage and an exhibition called “The Art of the Draughtsman” that features original drawings of the Canal plans and photographs. Plus, the kids will love the huge dress-up area complete with children’s tables, books, toys, beanbags and puppets and a puppet stage.
