Designed by renowned architect I.M. Pei (who went on to design the National Gallery in Washington DC and the addition to the Louvre), the Everson is as famous for its art as for the architecture that encases it. Dubbed “a work of art for works of art” when it opened in 1968, the Everson was I. M. Pei’s first museum, arguably launching his career and putting the museum at the forefront of contemporary architecture. The museum is internationally respected for its extensive and excellent ceramics collection (including Robineau porcelains), as well as its collection of 19th- and 20th-century American art by luminaries including Jackson Pollock, Charles Burchfield, Barbara Kruger and Andrew Wyeth. Additionally, the Everson was one of the first museums to start extensively collecting art videos when they emerged as a legitimate genre in the late 1960s and 1970s. The collection of nearly 500 tapes includes works by Nam June Paik, Mary Lucier, William Wegman and Bill Viola.
