Known internationally for its success in breeding red pandas, the Knoxville Zoo is quite modern and sophisticated for its size, housing 800 animals in healthy, natural settings. Although not as large as others, it’s considered a top tier zoo nationally for its groundbreaking programs and high level of maintenance. Black bears, tigers, giraffes and elephants are among the highlights. There are special exhibits just for children, such as Kids Cove, which explores life in the early 1900s with a play cabin, vegetable gardens and petting zoo. Since the exhibits are expansive, be prepared to walk distances with comfortable shoes and water if it’s hot.
